Children can suffer learning disabilities, personality changes, or even worse outcomes as a result of a brain injury. We never want to think it would happen to our own children, but unfortunately, hospitals nationwide see children in their ER’s every day due to bike-related head injuries.
Bike helmets are very effective in preventing brain injuries.
Set an example by wearing your helmet and have your child wear their helmet every time you ride. Encourage other parents to serve as role models for their children by wearing one too.
Make sure the helmet is the correct size and that the helmet is adjusted correctly.
Measure the circumference of your child’s head. Helmets fit a range of head sizes and this step will assist you in finding the right size.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions closely
Use the eyes, ears, mouth and shake method to ensure proper fit and adjustment
With the helmet level on their head, the child should be able to see the front of the helmet by looking up.
The straps on the sides of the helmet should be adjusted so that the straps come to a “Y” just under the ear lobe. (this step is not necessary with woom helmets. See link below.)
Adjust the chin strap so that when your child opens their mouth, the helmet is pulled down on top of their head.
Have your child shake their head around. The helmet should not move around when doing so.
Replace the helmet if your child crashes in it. Helmets are designed to protect for one crash. After that, the helmet may not be as effective. Also, replace the helmet every few years as your child grows out of it.
I highly recommend the helmets from woom bikes. They are very user friendly, comfortable and stylish!
